The same industries of the Midwest that fueled the blues explosion in Chicago, IL, were in full swing in the manufacturing towns of Ohio. Factory workers from the South brought the Delta blues into contact with mountain music from Appalachia, and the result was rock and roll. Cincinnati, OH, was the home of influential early record labels that launched the careers of Hank Williams, David Allen Coe and James Brown.

During the 50s and 60s, doo-wop and rhythm and blues groups ruled Columbus, OH. Big name stars like Muddy Waters and BB King shared the stages of the Bronzeville clubs with local acts, the Four Pharaohs and the Supremes.
